Children are ingesting this dangerous object more and more every year

Children are ingesting this dangerous object more and more every yearChildren are ingesting this dangerous object more and more every yearA study published Friday in the Journal of Pediatricsannounced the rate that children swallow foreign objects has been rising sharply over the last 21 years.Children under the age of six accounts for 75% of all foreign body ingestion cases and 20% of one to three years olds have swallowed some fasson of a foreign body or another. The bulk of foreign bodies ingested, like pennies and Christmas ornaments, for instance, can be successfullydischarged, with very little if any lasting effects.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreMagnets and button batteries are particularly harmful. When button batteries become lodged in the esophagus, they increase PH and trigger chemical reactions that result in serious caustic damage. When multiple magnets are ingeste d, they attract across gastrointestinal walls, leading to perforation, necrosis, sepsis and sometimes even death. The rate at which children ingest foreign bodies has risen about 92% during the 21 year study period and is continuing to increase by about 4% annually.Data and methodsDanielle Orsagh-Yentis, Rebecca J. McAdams, Kristin J. Roberts, andLara B. McKenzie are the researchers behind the new report, which began with a retrospective analysis of data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance Systemfor children six years old and younger. Between 1995 and 2015,759,074 children were determined to have been evaluated for foreign body ingestion in emergency departments. Boys were found to ingest foreign objects more frequently than girls, as they made up about 52% of all the cases reviewed. As stated previously, most of the items swallowed were able to be successfully discharged, fortunately. Coins were ingested more than any other object (61.7%), then toys (10.3%), followed by batteries (6.8%).Button batteries were the most common batteries ingested. The potentially fatal body is in everyones house, whether they realize it or not, notes the studys lead author and Pediatric Gastroenterology Motility Fellow at Nationwide Childrens Hospital in Columbus, Ohio,Dr. Danielle Orsagh-Yentis.On balance, battery consumption has increased 150-fold in the two-decades-long study period. The continuedsurge in foreign object ingestion can only be guessed at, though the researchers believe the spike might be due to electronics becoming more prevalent in homes every year. People might just be having FBI evaluated more meticulously.Because so much tissue damage can be enacted by the chemicals in batteries so quickly (as quickly as two hours in fact) the researchers stress the necessity for diligent surveillance-parents should especially be on the lookout for magnet and battery consumption Orsagh-Yentis, explains, That means keeping them at elevated locations so the childre n cant get to them as easily, keeping them in secure locations and, particularly, keeping them out of childrens sight so theyre not even thinking about them. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

The Purpose of an Employee Handbook

The Purpose of an Employee HandbookThe Purpose of an Employee HandbookAre you interested in what an employee handbook is, what it does, and how it can support both employers and employees? Heres what you will want to know about employee handbooks. An employee handbook is a compilation of the policies, procedures, working conditions, and behavioral expectations that guide employee actions in a particular workplace. In a handbook, these policies and procedures range from how to access your employee personnel file to your open door policy, your promotion policy, and your Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) policies. Employee handbooks generally include information about the company, a welcome letter from the president or CEO, the companys mission, vision, purpose, values, and broad strategic goals, the companys commitment to employees, and various non-compete, non-disclosure, and employee confidentiality agreements, if the company use s them. They also summarize attendance expectations, define nonexempt and exempt employment statuses, titelbild severe weather closings, the use of company property, and anything else an employeeneeds to know. Finally, most handbooks clearly present employee compensation and benefits plus paid time off in detail, and additional terms and conditions of employment. How Do Employers Use an Employee Handbook? Employers use handbooks to provide a consistent set of policies and procedures. They also use handbooks to describe working conditions and the workplace behavior and contributions they expect from employees. They believe that by putting forth a shared approach to addressing workplace issues, they have the best potential to create a harmonious, fair, employee and employer supportive workplace. Employers also use the policies in an employee handbook to provide the roadmap to the ethical and legal treatment of employees. They protect themselves from lawsuits, such as harassment cl aims, wrongful termination claims, and discrimination claims. Employee handbooks generally contain a code of conduct for employees that setguidelines around appropriate behavior for the individual workplace. Progressive discipline and procedures for making a complaint are also in most employee handbooks. It allows the employer to know that employees are informed about actions and behaviors that will warrant disciplinary action up to and including employment termination in their workplace. In locations where at-will employment exists, the at-will employment statement is in the employee handbook. What Employee Handbooks Do for Employees With a well-written, comprehensive handbook, employees always know what is expected of them at work. They know how their employer will address and apply the policies and procedures of the business and what they, as employees, can expect from the employer. They know how their employer will address problems and complaints. They have a reasonable expe ctation that employees with similar issues will receive similar treatment. They share a knowledge base with the rest of the employees, too, and know what is important for the business. Employees like seeing the benefits and compensation that they are entitled to receive spelled out. Finally, the handbook serves a quick reference guide to a great deal of information that employees need at work. Legal Issues about Employee Handbooks Employees are expected to review and become familiar with the contents of the employee handbook. A majority of employers ask employees to sign a statement to demonstrate that the employee has read the employee handbook and agrees to abide by the contents. This signed document acknowledges that the employee understands and has received a copy of the employee handbook. Additionally, the statement contains a disclaimer, similar to the disclaimer in the actual employee handbook, that the employee understands that the contents are simply policies and guidel ines, not a contract or an implied contract with employees. Further, the employee handbook reserves the right to the employer to change the policies and procedures, and thus the contents of the handbook, at any time, with or without notice. (Smart employers always give employees notice so as not to affect employee moraleadversely, but theyre covered by this statement.) Finally, most employers have a complete and updated copy of their employee handbooks online on the companys proprietary website or Intranet, for the convenience of employees.

4 Tips for Becoming a Better Team Player

4 Tips for Becoming a Better Team Player 4 Tips for Becoming a Better Team Player There is a reason these are common interview questions all employers want employees who are gruppe players. No one can achieve greatness completely on their own, and most companies are looking foremployees who know this to be true. The best candidates are those who canhighlight their own successes as well as praise others for theirs. These candidates will go on to become the kind of employees whorecognize that success is always better achieved through teamwork. Are you bedrngnis much of a team player yourself? Or maybe youre just worried that youre starting to get a little self-centered and need a brief refresher course. Whatever the case, here are four tips to help you become a better team player and, as a result, become the kind of employee organizations will fight for.1. Its Not WhatYou Say, but How You Say ItThis is a simple, but important one. Consider your word choice when interacting with your c olleagues. Choosing to say we instead of I is a small gesture, but its a gesture that can go a long way in recognizing the contributions of others. At my company,City Wide Franchise, we have all become accustomed to referring to the whole group, rather than to certain individuals. Communicating in this waystrengthens our bonds and gives us greater purpose.2. Keep All Lines of Communication OpenWhether you communicate with your team through email, weekly webinars, team meetings, or one-on-one meetings, its important that you use some method to foster ongoing, clear, and consistent communication. Doing so ensures that nothing gets lost in translation and that everyone is held accountable to deadlines.AtCity Wide Franchise, we use a tool called Asana, which is designed to help teams collaborate more efficiently. Instead of using email, we create projects, assign tasks to team members, and track progredienz through an online dashboard.3. Have an Open MindsetNothing ever goes exactly as pl anned. This is especially true when it comes to working in a group environment. One team member can present a new approach that changes the direction of an entire project.Rather than challenging or contradicting opposing viewpoints, an effective team player will demonstrate flexibility, embrace change, and show a willingness to try something new and different.4 Dont Forget to CelebrateGreat team players celebrate the successes of their teammates. One way to recognize fellow teammates is to include a shoutouts section in the company newsletter, where team members and team leaders can acknowledge their colleagues great work. Another effective recognition tool is to set aside some time during team meetings for team members to stand up and acknowledge their coworkers efforts. It is incrediblyimportant to celebrate team victories. At City Wide Franchise, we hold a monthly scorecard meeting that we use to measure and share group and company-wide successes. We also host off-site celebrations to show our appreciation for groups that exceed expectations. Its not hard to be a team player, and learning to become one will help you advance your career to new heights. Really, its all about refocusing your mindset stop thinking about yourself as an individual at work, and start thinking about yourself as an important part of an overall team. Do this, and youll make a name for yourself as a real asset to your company.

Are you living to work or working to live and does it really matter

Are you living to work or working to live and does it really matter Are you living to work or working to live and does it really matter We want to have our cake and eat it too - but in this day and age, it seems that women are always being told to choose. For those of us not interested in that narrative, how do you find a career that can satisfy your personal and professional needs - while pursuing your passion?I spent more than four years working for a nonprofit with an incredible mission. I found the work valuable, challenging, and fulfilling. To top it off, I loved my co-workers. But eventually, a few important things - my salary, my passion, and my goals for the future - started to feel like they were misaligned. How could I do work that I believed in, while also being smart about finances, and my future? And, which was more important?Even though I loved the work I was doing for the nonprofit, it was hard to face the truth that my salary wasn’t quite cutting it. I live in San Francisco, arguably the most expensive city in the country to live in, and it was getting harder and harder to invest in and save for my future. Lots of my friends were living more comfortably, and while I know it’s not healthy to compare, I couldn’t help but question if I could be making more money, and whether or not it was something I deserved, as opposed to something I just wanted. What does “living wage” mean to you?I kept thinking about what the idea of a “living wage” was, and how that differed depending on who you were. Sure, I made enough money to afford the basics and I had plenty of fun, but how was that different from what a “living wage” meant to someone else - someone who had kids, was hoping to buy a house, or was paying off loans, etc.?So I made a list of the things I knew I wanted to accomplish in the next two, three, five, and 10 years. The truth was sobering, but it whipped me into shape. Unfortunately, it also meant I needed to seek new employment. But what about my passion?Looking for a new job meant I had to come to terms with something I wasn’t ready to come to terms with y et. Was I going to “sell out”? I’d spent a considerable part of my life working very hard on a low salary - but it was worth it, and I don’t regret one day of it, because I felt great about the work I was doing. It mattered to me, and it had a positive impact, and that was truly something that I factored into my “compensation.” I didn’t think I’d ever give it up.So I was worried about finding work that I believed was important and being compensated enough. I didn’t want to work for what I thought to myself was “some random company” where I’d be toiling away on behalf of something I didn’t care about, only for a higher salary. But I also knew that money was going to help ensure that I would be prepared for the life I wanted in the future. How do you choose?I asked lots of friends and family how they felt about their own jobs and income, and how that contributed to their happiness. Their answers ran the gamut from general responses like: “I don’t care muc h for what I do, but I love my life,” to “I like my job because of x,y, and z and that’s enough for now.”Everyone understood the predicament I was in because most people had seemed to make peace with similar questions long ago. But I still felt like I had to choose between work I loved for less money, or work I didn’t love for more money. And I didn’t know how. What I chose was both. And no, it’s not because I found the perfect job with the perfect salary. Those jobs do exist - if you have one, you’re lucky! - but I still haven’t found mine yet. I did, however, come to peace with the fact that I was going to have to choose one over the other sometimes, but not forever.I found a job that I do like, and yes, I can finally breathe easier financially. But I also do a lot of work outside of my job, including freelancing for my former organization, to keep myself engaged with my passions. And someday in the future, the time will come when I’m ready to switch back. Or, maybe by then, my goals will have changed. And that’s okay.Once I realized that “having it all” didn’t necessarily have to mean having it all at once, I felt the freedom to act on what I wanted, as opposed to what I needed, and then understood that those two things had been more closely aligned than I thought all along. This article first appeared on Career Contessa.

Engineering a Win Over Prostate Cancer

Engineering a Win Over Prostate Cancer Engineering a Win Over Prostate Cancer Engineering a Win Over Prostate Cancer Dr. Parissa Ziaei dreamed of becoming a doctor growing up. As a Washington State University Ph.D. student in the interdisciplinary materials science and engineering program, she focused her efforts on a devastating disease. Prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of death among men in the United States, she says. This is one of those diseases where its very important to find it before symptoms emerge because often its too late at that point. Anytime you can find a way to make procedures easier on people that will only help in getting them involved. This thinking meant her work involved creating a noninvasive technique and device to not only diagnose the disease, but determine how well treatment is working. One of the best ways to diagnose involves biopsies but, with that, there is the chance of getting infection or having bleeding, she says. In our experiment we designed a technology to capture fat droplets, exosomes which are teeny tiny packages close to 100 nanometers. This package has all the gene formation that can easily travel between the cell and have intercellular communication. These exosomes, through this process, can show what has cancer. For the device, she grew silicon, but in the form of glass nanosprings, which also have biomarkers with them. These nanosprings produce high surface area: almost 260 meters squared/per gram, she explains. Dr. Parissa Ziaei prepares silica nanosprings for a prostate cancer detection device. Image: WSU It would be easy to get functionalized and because you have high surface area we are able to function at the surface with a lot of biomarker and molecules, she says. Because of this, we can capture a large number of exosomes with the spring. The nanospring in the silicon wafer has been capturing well. In the future, the idea is to use this technology to make a similar device to capture more exosomes and use it when it comes to treatment and the diagnosis. The silica wafer implemented, according to her research, uses chemical vapor deposition for part of this process and the silica nanosprings have flexible support for aspects such as biosensors and enzymatic microreactors. The efforts on this project have been supported by the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs. The hope in the future for this project is that a blood or a urine sample can go to a diagnostic lab and the device will be able to measure the number of exosomes and based on that say they have cancer or not, she says. Or use the device for the total treatment, the doctor processing the treatment plan and through a sample seeing how effective the treatment was. For Ziaei, she will continue to be spurred on by the true origins of her dreamhelping others. I always look back on being around five or so years years old, a kiddo, walking around pretending to be doing the treating, she says. To feel Im useful to others, having the opportunity in this area is unbelievably fulfilling. Eric Butterman is an independent writer. For Further Discussion The hope in the future is that a blood or a urine sample can go to a diagnostic lab and the device will be able to measure the number of exosomes and based on that say they have cancer or not. Job Interview Question What is Your Greatest Accomplishment

Job Interview Question What is Your Greatest Accomplishment Job Interview Question What is Your Greatest Accomplishment When it comes to interview questions, hiring managers often aren’t all that original.  From the dreaded “tell me about yourself” to the standard quizzing on your professional background and skills, interviews often have a cadence and predictable aspect.  Savvy job seekers recognize this and use the trait to their advantage, studying up on commonly asked questions. The “what is your greatest accomplishment” job interview question is often geared towards providing insight into how you view your skills and achievements.  Your employer is looking to find out just what you’re capable of, as well as your ability to effectively communicate the why and how’s of the milestone. While you may be a bit hesitant at first, now is certainly not the time for humility.  Here are a few tips for tackling the greatest accomplishment themed question so you can take advantage of your time to shine. Make it Relevant If you’ve been in the career force for any period of time you’re likely to have conquered more than a few goals.  Choose a specific moment that is relevant to the job you’re currently applying for. If you’re looking for a management position, talk about the time you lead your team of direct reports into achieving a stellar milestone.  If you’re a recent grad, focus on something from your college days that would demonstrate a trait listed as desired in the job description. Look for the specific requirements of the role and focus on those for the biggest impact. Focus on Specific Results When it comes to answering questions regarding your achievements, candidates are often tempted to focus on events or circumstances.  To make a bigger impact, be sure to couch your answers in terms of the specific results achieved. Describe the project or task you were given, but then talk about the final outcome of your accomplishment.  If you increased sales, provide quantifiable numbers and percentages. Finish a project ahead of schedule, set out the number of days and costs savings if any, your excellence yielded. By talking about the end result your potential employer will better be able to see just how you could benefit their company or department. Multiple Accomplishments Have a lighter job history or can’t decide which accomplishment to review in the interview room?  Try creating a list ahead of time and rank them in an order you feel is most indicative of their scale or impact.  Choose two or three relevant successes and start out with something along the lines of “I’ve been fortunate to have many accomplishments in my career.”  Remember, it isn’t bragging if you’ve been asked to pitch your strong qualities and relevance for the position. The major achievement question is common and likely to come up in most modern interview rooms.  Remember to prepare by thinking about your answer ahead of time and specifically crafting your response to the job you’re applying for.  Do this and you’ll be well on your way to selling yourself as a quality candidate and landing that job offer.

Four Steps to Help Sales and Marketing Play Nice Together

Four Steps to Help Sales and Marketing Play Nice Together Four Steps to Help Sales and Marketing Play Nice Together Four Steps to Help Sales and Marketing Play Nice Together Fernandez, President and CEO, Marketo Its not an easy task to encourage marketing and sales to communicate better, let alone see eye-to-eye and truly collaborate. But devoting time and attention to achieving this goal is far more than just a nice thing to do. It is imperative, and can be a major competitive advantage for your company, particularly since so few businesses get it right. Creating a Blueprint for Growth Jim Dickie, Managing Partner with CSO Insights, a research and consulting firm that specializes in helping companies improve marketing and sales alignment, sums up the problem this way: Im still shocked at the number of companies which do not even have a formally agreed-upon definition of what [makes a lead] sales-ready. The marketing team has its definition of what is marketing-ready. And the sales department has its own point of view on what constitutes a real opportunity. But there is typically a significant disconnect between the differing views, and that carries forward into continuous conflict at the boundary between marketing and sales. Four Steps to Drive Sales Motivationand Coordination To get you started, here are four small steps you can take that will point your marketing and sales teams in the right direction: Focus on value delivered. Educate marketing and sales team members on each others contributions to your companys short- and long-term revenue growth. Hold regular, well-defined meetings where key marketing and sales executives identify shared obstacles, develop common revenue objectives, and set strategies for overcoming barriers to growth. Case in point: Wes Wasson, Senior Vice President and CMO of Citrix Systems, comments that his VP of Demand Generation also serves as part of the sales team staff: He is as much a part of the sales team as my marketing organization. He attends all the sales meetings and seamlessly integrates his work with that of the sales group. At the same time, he owns allocation of the worldwide demand generation budget, which gives him an important level of control over what ultimately happens on the marketing side. Agree on lead quality. Have marketing and sales jointly determine what makes a good lead, and when that good lead is ready for sales. These definitions are crucial, as theyre a frequent sore spot in the sales-marketing relationship. You must address them head-on in an atmosphere of shared responsibility and opportunity. Take each other to work. Try a Take your colleague to work initiative. Marketing should go or at least listen in on sales calls, and salespeople should regularly participate in meetings concerning marketing strategy and creative development. This sort of collaboration may sound incredibly self-evident, but it actually occurs way too rarely. My own company has made joint meetings and activities between marketing and sales a standard operating procedure. Take them out for a beer. Youve heard the maxim people buy from people. Its true. You must never lose sight of the fact that human relationships matter. While structured initiatives can begin to improve the alignment between your marketing and sales teams, salespeople and marketing people are, in the end, just people. And in many companies, the two dont mix very much. Sometimes its because they sit in different buildings or states or countries, and sometimes its just because they have quite different personalities and dont naturally socialize together. Find ways to encourage your marketing and sales teams to get to know each other, both at the management level, and the grass roots level. Sales may be from Mars and marketing from Venus, but every so often, a little bit of magic happens when you mix them together. The key to building a healthy atmosphere of communication and cross-functional cooperation is to embrace the strengths of both your marketing and sales organizations. You will need to shift your organizations practice away from linear lead hand-offs and focus instead on mutual and shared accountability for lead generation, nurturing, conversion, and customer loyalty. With a little work, and by following the suggestions outlined above, your marketing and sales teams will begin their journey toward a truly collaborative, symbiotic relationship that will turbo-charge your revenue growth engine. Key Takeaways for Sales and Marketing: The relationship between marketing and sales is an unhappy one in many companies, much like a bad marriage. Transforming that relationship into a more respectful and productive one can be a source of tremendous opportunity for revenue growth. Many sales executives want marketing to get out of the way whenever a lead is handed off to them. However, thats usually not possible, because prospects continue having contact with marketing material, including websites and webinars. The tasks and personalities of career marketing and sales professionals are usually very different, which aggravates their differences and makes synergy more difficult to achieve. Initial steps toward improving the sales-marketing relationship include frequent meetings to define goals, create shared definitions for lead quality, and to get to know each other on human terms. How to clean up your social media before a job-search

How to “clean up” your social media before a job-search How to “clean up” your social media before a job-search Still think hiring managers aren’t checking your Facebook or LinkedIn and searching your name in Google? Now might be a good time to reconsider that stance: 70% of employers in 2017 used social media to screen candidates, according to a CareerBuilder survey. This percentage isn’t likely to decrease, but don’t let it intimidate you â€" you won’t need to delete all your Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts. Let’s take a look at what you can do to prep your social media profiles for a job search, which might entail a background check or a critical look at your online reputation.Google yourselfMillennials are the age group most likely to do a Google self-search, but it’s a good idea for anyone to do one before a job interview to see what comes up in search results. Check each page and do some advanced searching â€" you’d be surprised what Google can pick up.When doing a self-search, does your personal website show up on the first page of results? Is the content displaye d about you positive, accurate, and relevant? These are two important questions you should be asking.Below are some other things to consider when you do a self-search on the Internet.Check for personal information: A simple Google search can reveal a lot about you, including your phone number, address, email, location, and any photos of yourself.Always do an Incognito Search: Using a private browsing window when you search yourself is particularly important because this allows you to see unbiased results that aren’t affected by your previous searches, logged in services, or other personalization factors that Google implements. Personalized searching is useful when it comes to searching for relevant products or services, but when preparing for a job interview, you want to see through the eyes of a hiring manager and have unbiased search results.Set a Google alert for your name: If you set one, every time your name comes up in a Google search result, you will be notified right away by email. This is particularly helpful for those who blog or are in journalism and want to keep track of their published posts. You can also find out which sites have been linking to your work.If you’d like a thorough analysis of your online reputation, background checking sites like BrandYourself.com provide feedback about search results for your name and will help you fix any issues you have.Separate personal from professionalMany of us have two sides to our social media accounts: personal and professional. Yet sometimes, the line between the two is blurred. Content that belongs on a private Facebook account might end up on a professional Twitter page and vice versa. So how can you draw the line when it comes to your personal and professional sides?Avoid posting controversial topics, religious and political views, or personal information on professional accounts. Instead, use these platforms for engaging in conversations with your connections and sharing your career wins. Keep r eading below for examples of what is safe and unsafe to post on your social media accounts.Appropriate things to post on social media Business updates Sharing news about your industry Photos and videos of interesting place or things to do in your city Current events articles Upcoming conferences, webinars, or other events Inappropriate things to post on social media Complaints about your boss or work Photos of you partying Political and religious rants Vulgar and violent language Relationship or personal issues Remember, you want to show off best qualities to a hiring manager in a job interview, so keep the same practice in your social media accounts. The great thing about having an active professional account is that you can pick and choose what you want to display.Make personal accounts more secureBefore posting onto your personal social media accounts, be mindful of what you’re sharing and who is going to see it. Internet content lasts forever, and while privacy settings may protect your accounts from some threats, nothing will ever be truly private.Keeping this in mind, there are some steps you can take to strengthen the security of your personal Facebook and Twitter accounts.Facebook Who can see my stuff: This is the primary privacy setting you’ll find in Facebook’s Privacy Settings. You can switch the default public setting on your post under “Who can see my stuff?” and make your content only visible to friends. You can also choose who will see your post using the audience selector when you make a new Facebook status. The audience selector control remembers what you select, so unless you change your audience, all future posts will be shared with the same people. Limit past posts: If you have always made your Facebook posts public and now want to improve your security, limiting old posts will prevent anyone outside of your friends from seeing it. Timeline and tagging: You can adjust these settings for who can see tagged photos of you on your timeline, and also review any photos, statuses and comments that others have tagged you in. Photo settings: Even if you’ve made your Facebook statuses only visible to friends, profile pictures and cover photos are open to the public by default. Check to see if your albums and mobile uploads are set to public as well. Twitter Protect my Tweets: By default, your Tweets are all public. Selecting the “Protect my Tweets” option will make all your Tweets private and only visible to followers you’ve accepted. Turn off location: Twitter gives you the option to add your current location to your Tweet, but it isn’t a default setting. Discoverability: Disabling this option will prevent anyone that has your email address or phone number from searching and finding your Twitter account. No tagging in photos: Like Facebook, turning off this setting stops other users from tagging you in a photo they post. Compared to Facebook, Twitter’s privacy settings are quite simple. Make sure you understand all the privacy settings of your personal social media accounts, and take the time to review your posts when in the job search process.Keep professional accounts publicHaving no online presence isn’t a good sign to hiring managers, as this indicates to them that you aren’t well-rounded. Showing that you are fluent in social media platforms is also promising to employers â€" after all, being savvy in social media is a desirable skill to have on a resume. For professional social media accounts, it’s great if you can keep your name public so that it is easily searchable. Keep your Twitter, LinkedIn, or Facebook content focused on what you can offer in your field and what accomplishments you want to highlight. Be careful of sharing too many details about your career, but also avoid not sharing enough about your job qualifications, as this may keep you from getting more opportunities to netw ork. Finally, remember to update your professional social media accounts frequently. Employers are looking to see that you’re engaging in your industry, whether it’s current events topics or professional development. They also want to see how you are influencing others or what you offer to your field.Polish and clean up your accountsThe last step you need to take to ensure your accounts are job-search appropriate is to do some social media housekeeping. This doesn’t just mean removing unsavory photos or inappropriate statuses on Facebook. Check over your LinkedIn and professional profiles so that everything is up-to-date and all the information is accurate. One of the first things a hiring manager will see on your social media profiles is your photo. Having a good profile photo will not only increase your response and referral rates, but also a way to build your personal brand. Research shows that an effective profile photo is crucial for making yourself look competent, likeable , and influential. If you find that going through all your old Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram posts is time-consuming, Scrubber is a handy tool that show you any posts that may be a red flag to employers.ConclusionEmployers can learn a lot about you from your resume and interview, but sometimes it takes a little bit more to sell yourself (although there’s a delicate balance between selling yourself and being transparent in the hiring process). Take advantage of the benefits of social media â€" it’s an often-needed extra step to show what you bring to the table, a way to add flair to your application, and make a lasting impression on your potential employers. This article first appeared on Kununu.
